Northern Hardwood Chapter SAF: I recently became active with my local SAF chapter, The Northern Hardwood Chapter of the Allegheny SAF. I am the Chair-Elect for 2024. In February, we hosted the 2024 Allegheny SAF Winter Meeting. Over 100 forestry professionals and 30 forestry students attended.

NASP (National Advanced Silviculture Program):  In the fall of 2022 and the spring of 2023, I attended NASP through the US Forest Service. This intensive silvicultural training occurs over 4 different 2 week modules. The modules were located in Minnesota, Oregon, Arizona, and West Virginia/Kentucky. I am now working on my task book to complete the path to certification.

New York State Society of American Foresters Meeting: Attended my first SAF meeting in Syracuse, NY for the Annual NYSAF Winter Meeting 2017. Emerald Ash Borer, effects of changing climates on changing forests, social perceptions of forestry and how to change them, current economic and policy issues in the NY and the Carbon Cycle were all presented, discussed and debated in great detail.

Pheasant Release Project: In the summer of 2012 I assisted in raising pheasants at the Mount Jewett Sportsmen's Club. We raised over 300 pheasants through the summer months. Duties included daily feeding and watering, maintaining the enclosure, bill clipping and releasing the pheasants into the wild once they had reached maturity.

Philmont Scout Ranch: In the summer of 2012 my Boy Scout Troop traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico for a 12 day backcountry trek. I served as the Crew Leader for our group and was charged with maintaining organization and logistics throughout the trek as well as assigning daily duties and leading the group in wilderness problem solving. In serving as Crew Leader I learned a great deal about group dynamics and improved my abilities to be an effective leader and role model.

Eagle Scout Project: I earned the rank of Eagle Scout in November of 2009. My Eagle project included renovating a pavilion at the Mt. Jewett Community Park. The project involved extensive planning, fund raising, obtaining approvals and authorizations, organization and implementation. The project included making the pavilion handicapped accessible, building picnic tables, installing charcoal grills, painting, staining and landscaping. During the process I learned that there is much more to being a leader than just having the title.

Fish Habitat Projects: Between 2011 and 2013 I have volunteered for various fish habitat projects in McKean and Elk counties in Pennsylvania. I assisted the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission in constructing and placing fish habitats (porcupine cribs) at East Branch Dam. In addition, on two separate occasions I volunteered as part of a cooperative project between the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the U.S. Forest Service and the Mt. Jewett Sportsmen's Club in constructing porcupine cribs and turtle platforms at two different ponds located in the Allegheny National Forest.
